Do You Brush Your Tongue Often Enough?

Posted on 7/23/2017 by Lemond Hunter
Proper oral care includes brushing your tongue.
Have you been making sure to brush your tongue each time you brush your teeth? If not, then you are missing out on a lot of bacteria in your mouth. The bacteria thrive in warm and wet places, making your tongue ideal. If you neglect brushing it when you brush your teeth, then you are redepositing those same bacteria right onto your teeth as soon as you put your toothbrush back. That's not what you want when the goal is to keep your teeth clean.

How to Brush Your Tongue Properly

When you are done brushing your teeth, before you rinse off your toothbrush, make sure you brush your entire tongue. Start by brushing the top part of your tongue by your taste buds. Then, brush the sides of your tongue to get any debris off of your tongue, and make sure to get under your tongue, too. Finally, rinse your mouth after you rinse off your toothbrush, to ensure that you get all of the loosened debris out of your mouth.

This should be done twice per day, as you brush your teeth. This can be done before or after flossing, but it needs to be done regularly. It only takes 20-30 seconds per time you brush, making it an easy way to keep your mouth healthy for about one minute per day. Your tongue holds on to a lot of bacteria simply because of its shape. If you want to help keep your oral health optimal, make sure you get into all the crevices of your mouth right around your tongue.

For more information about how you should be keeping your tongue clean, talk with your dentist. They see the benefits of people caring for their tongue regularly. They can let you know how good you have been doing at keeping up with proper tongue cleaning maintenance.
