How to Keep Your Mouth Clean Following Pocket Reduction

Posted on 10/10/2018 by Lemond Hunter
How to Keep Your Mouth Clean Following Pocket ReductionPocket reduction surgery involves several dental procedures that access the roots of the teeth to remove tartar and bacteria. This procedure is used in cases of severe gum disease, and it works to reduce bacterial spread and inflammation, ultimately saving your teeth.

If you need to have a pocket reduction procedure, success will depend on your ability to heal properly and keep your mouth clean after treatment.

Rinsing Your Mouth

After your procedure, you may feel like you need to rinse out your mouth. Try to avoid this for at least 24 hours after surgery. After that, you can rinse using a mild mouthwash. Repeat as needed to keep both your mouth and the dressing clean.

Brushing and Flossing

It is important to keep a good oral hygiene routine in order to maintain a clean, healthy mouth. This involves regular brushing and flossing beginning the day after your procedure. Just be sure to avoid the surgical site, but as far as the rest of your mouth, it should be business as usual.

Watch What You Eat

Your diet is also important during your post-operative time. You may want to stick to soft foods initially, and avoid chewing on the side in which the procedure was complete. Avoid hot foods and drinks for at least one hour after the procedure, and ensure that you get adequate nutrition. A healthy diet is essential for both healing and to help your body feel better.

Avoid Alcohol and Smoking

Alcohol and smoking should be avoided after your procedure. Alcohol can interact with any prescription medications that you might be taking, leading to dangerous consequences. Smoking can inhibit the healing process, and it can compromise your oral health and the effectiveness of the procedure.
