How to Ease Jaw Aches When Your TMJ Gets InflamedBefore we give you our home remedy tips about how to manage the pain of TMJ, let's look at what it is and talk about what you need to do to be diagnosed.

Temporomandibular joint syndrome (TMJ) is the inflammation of the jawbone in the joint where it attaches to your skull. It can be caused by injury, stress, arthritis, teeth grinding, gum chewing or misaligned teeth.

It is more common in women between the ages of 18 to 44 and there can also be a genetic predisposition to TMJ. People who are more sensitive to pain and have increased stress responses may be more susceptible to TMJ.

If you think that you may have TMJ, please call our office and come in for a full examination so that we can assess your situation and help you find the best treatment plan.

Your Diagnosis is TMJ – Now What?

Once you've received your official diagnosis from us that confirms you have TMJ, you can begin treating yourself at home. Pain management and reduction is key. Avoiding things that aggravate the joint is essential, reduce your stress, stop chewing gum and if you're grinding your teeth in your sleep, we can fit you for a mouth guard.

If the pain and swelling persists, trying massage or gentle stretches can help, as well as applying ice packs over the joints and taking over the counter anti-inflammatory medications.

Most importantly, don't stress about it. There is treatment out there that is as simple as home remedies and as complex as physical therapy or surgery. Whatever the stage of your TMJ, we can help you find the treatment that works best for you.

Give us a call today and let us help you get on to the path to a pain free life. We look forward to helping you!
