How to Tell When You Filling Should Be Replaced

Posted on 2/22/2021 by Lemond Hunter
How to Tell When You Filling Should Be ReplacedIn most instances, we replace fillings when they are larger and, because of their size, they have weakened a tooth.

Signs You Need to Replace Your Filling

Erosion or wear-and-tear ultimately can cause a filling to crack. This can happen easily if you grind and clench your teeth. You don't want this to happen, as even a very narrow crack allows the entry of bacteria - bacteria that can lead to further decay. While some cracks can be seen on visual examination, others may not be discovered until we x-ray the teeth. You should also replace a filling if your filled tooth hurts. This occurs when a cavity forms beneath the filling material. In addition, you may need to replace a filling if you feel sensitivity when drinking anything cold. If a filling is leaky or does not adhere well to the sides of a tooth, sensitivity can easily occur.

When Your Filling Falls Out

One of the most obvious signs you need to replace a filling or get a new restoration is when a filling loosens and falls out. If this happens, call us without delay. If you experience sensitivity, apply some dental cement to the filling until your appointment.

Other Signs You that Your Filling Needs Replacement

Do you have a tooth-colored resin filling that has yellowed or darkened? If so, you should have it replaced. Once the filling is replaced, your tooth will look natural again. Also, keep in mind that any filling that is older, or shows some signs of wear, should be replaced before it develops a crack. Depending on the type of filling material used, fillings may last between 8 and 15 years.
