Sleep Health Test

The SleepMed ARES Questionnaire by SleepMed, Inc. is used to gather information about risk factors for sleep apnea, including gender, body mass index, neck circumference, daytime drowsiness (e.g., Epworth sleepiness score), frequency of snoring, observed apneas, and history of hypertension or diabetes. The ARES applies patented algorithms to calculate SpO2 and quantify the occurrence and severity of desaturation events and associated arousals (based on changes in pulse rate, head movement, snoring sounds and/or airflow). The ARES analyzes the ARES Questionnaire responses and assigns risk levels of no, low, or high risk for OSA. A summary report provides information useful to physicians in diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea.

What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is one of those disorders that everyone has probably heard of, but no one fully understands. It's one of those things that is hard to know if you have because, well, you are sleeping while you are asleep. Millions of Americans suffer from untreated sleep apnea, and chances are good that you know someone who has it. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the airway becomes restricted by oral structures (the jaw, tongue, and flesh in the throat) and your body has difficulty getting the air it needs.

If you keep your partner awake with snoring, there is a good chance that you have this variety of sleep apnea. Plenty of people who suffer from OSA don't snore, but it's a decent tipoff that you might have it if you do snore.

What is Central Sleep Apnea?

Only about 20% of sleep apnea are classified as central sleep apnea (CSA). This usually boils down to an issue of your brain forgetting to tell your body to breath. The result: you stop breathing for anywhere from several seconds to half a minute or more. This can happen hundreds of times per night.

The result of either kind of sleep apnea is the same. You awake groggy and not well rested and will have difficulty performing normal functions throughout the day because of it. When you have to struggle to breathe at night, you are essentially awoken many times throughout the night. To feel well rested you need to enter a deep cycle of sleep known as REM sleep. If you wake up before or during REM sleep, you will never achieve a fulfilling sleep.
